Sensing Energy Fields

Have you ever noticed a subtle feeling at the back of your neck—only to turn and find someone looking at you?

Or felt immediately at ease with some people—and uncomfortable with others—without knowing why?

These experiences are more common than we think. They point to a natural human capacity: the ability to sense energy.

The Body’s Inner Knowing

In the Barbara Brennan tradition, this field is called the aura, or Human Energy Field. In contemporary language, it is often referred to as the biofield—a subtle field that surrounds and interpenetrates the body.

Neuroscience offers a complementary understanding through the concept of interoception—the body’s ability to sense internal and environmental signals. What we often call “gut feelings” are meaningful forms of perception.

When you feel energized around one person and drained around another, your body is reading information—responding to the quality and coherence of another’s field.

The aura reflects our physical state, emotional patterns, thoughts, and deeper levels of consciousness. Even without trying, we are constantly sensing it.

With awareness and practice, this natural sensitivity can become more refined, offering insight into:

  • Emotional states
  • Relational dynamics
  • Vitality and balance
  • Deeper patterns of being

This is not a rare gift—it is a trainable human capacity.

How To Begin

Because we are always immersed in energy fields, we often overlook them—just as a fish does not notice the water it swims in.

The first step is simple:
slow down and begin to notice.

Next time you are with someone:
  • Soften your breath
  • Let part of your attention rest in your body
  • Observe subtle impressions without analyzing
You may begin to notice:
  • Sensations
  • Emotions
  • Images or colors
  • Intuitive knowing

The key is not to force perception, but to allow it to arise.

Ways We Perceive Energy

Through the Body (Somatic Awareness)

You may begin to notice:
  • Feeling relaxed and open with some people
  • Feeling guarded or tense with others
  • A natural impulse to step closer—or away
These are energetic responses.
Often:
  • Resonance feels like ease and familiarity
  • Dissonance may feel draining or contracting

The impulse to place your hands on an area of pain is also part of this system—your body intuitively offering support through the field.

Through Vision

Many people already perceive aspects of the aura without realizing it.
Try this:
  • Soften your gaze
  • Look just beyond the edges of a body or your hands
  • Allow your eyes to relax
You may begin to see:
  • A faint glow or haze
  • Subtle light
  • Flashes of color
Common impressions may include:
  • Soft blues → physical vitality
  • Greens → balance and inner harmony
  • Rose tones → warmth and connection
  • Gold or fine light → more developed levels of the field

Let perception come and go naturally—like noticing stars appearing in the night sky.

Through Intuition and Subtle Senses

Energy perception may also arise as:
  • A sudden knowing
  • A word, tone, or inner sound
  • A memory or image
  • Even a subtle scent or taste
Intuition integrates many layers of perception into a single, clear impression.

You may think of someone just before they contact you, or feel a sense of familiarity with someone you’ve just met.

These are all expressions of energetic awareness.

The Structure Of The Aura

The human energy field can be understood as seven interconnected levels, each reflecting a different aspect of our being.

These levels interpenetrate one another, forming a dynamic and responsive field.

Level Distance Quality
Physical Sensation 1-3 in Blue lines of light. Physical vitality.
Emotional Self 3-8 in Multi-Colored flowing clouds. Feelings about ourselves.
Mental Clarity 6-12 in Yellow lines of light. Thoughts and beliefs about ourselves.
Relational Love 1.5-2 ft Multi-Colored streams of bioplasma. Relational Feelings across all levels of consciousness. Bridge between Personal and Transpersonal.
Divine Will and Blueprint 2-2.75 ft Cobalt template. Holds the frequency of Divine Will structural patterns and order through which energy becomes form.
Divine Love 2-2.75 ft Rays of colored opalescent light. Holds the frequency of Divine love.
Divine Mind; Higher Consciousness 2.5-3.5 ft Very fine Golden lines of light. Holds the frequency of Divine Mind and past karma.

The Chakras: Energy Centers

Within the aura are chakras—spinning centers that draw energy into the body.

Each chakra relates to a specific function:

Chakra Color Core Focus
Root Red Physical safety, grounding, and strength
Sacral Orange Sensuality, creativity, and relational flow
Solar Plexus Yellow Self-care, power, and boundaries
Heart Green Love, compassion, and connection
Throat Blue Communication and authentic expression
Third Eye Indigo Insight, vision, and imagination
Crown White/Violet Integration, meaning, and spiritual connection

The chakras draw energy inward; the aura expresses it outward.

When balanced, the system feels clear, alive, and coherent.

Simple Practices

1. Chakra Awareness

Close your eyes and bring each color to mind, one at a time.

Notice:
  • Is it bright and clear?
  • Faint or distant?
  • Dense or unclear?

There is nothing to fix—just begin by noticing.

2. Color Breathing

Bring awareness to your body and imagine breathing in each color:

red → orange → yellow → green → blue → indigo → white

Let each color gently fill your body and field.

Many people notice:
  • Increased warmth
  • Clarity
  • A greater sense of presence

3. Sensing the Field

Hold your hands in front of a neutral background.

  • Soften your gaze
  • Look between your fingers
  • Slowly move your hands
You may perceive:
  • Light
  • Subtle movement
  • Sensation between your hands

Whatever you notice is valid—this is how your system is beginning to perceive.

Let Your Light Expand

Sit comfortably and bring your awareness to a point just above your navel, deep within the body.

Imagine a small point of light there.

With each breath:
  • Allow the light to become clearer
  • Gently expand it through your body
  • Let it radiate outward into your field
There is nothing to force.

Simply allow what is already present to become more visible.

Over time, this inner light begins to:
  • Organize your field
  • Support coherence
  • Deepen your sense of presence

Continue... And Deepen...
